Training Signallers
We have two operations training centres for signallers.
Signallers control the direction of the trains and when they should start & stop. They do this by changing the direction of the rail by moving the points and by changing the colour of the lights on the signals (the traffic lights).
Initial Training
Typically, Network Rail recruits 400 - 500 new signallers every year. Before they start work in their first signalling box, they each complete a 9 week initial signalling course – mostly in the classroom but with some signal box experience on the network.
At our signalling training centres in Watford & Leeds, signallers use the most up-to-date training including the use of computer-based materials & signal panel simulators. In addition, they also learn the rules & regulations that govern signalling and how to use the signal control panels that they will use in their job.
On-going training
Signallers train for every type of signalling panel that they use – mechanical, electro-mechanical, push button and visual display unit (VDU). In addition, each signaller also learns how to use each individual signalling panel before they operate it so they are completely familiar with the particular geography, routes & train services controlled by that panel.
We run quarterly briefings for signallers to inform them about changes in rules & regulations so that they stay up-to-date throughout their career.
Training for the Mobile Operations Managers
Mobile Operations Managers who provide the first response to incidences on the lines are also trained at the operations training centres.
