Paddington Station

One of the most beautiful and memorable of all railway stations, Paddington has retained its Victorian character while evolving to meet modern demands on its use. Brunel was on the Building Committee for the Great Exhibition of 1851, and was much involved in the building of the Crystal Palace. This greatly influenced the design of Paddington with Brunel engaging contractors Fox, Henderson & Company, who had built the Crystal Palace, and the architect Matthew Digby Wyatt, who oversaw its construction, to help him. The station was built in 1851-4 at a total cost, including the huge Goods Depot and Carriage Department, of around £600,000.
