Delivering our Major Projects
Our investment programme is transforming Britain’s railway.
The size and scale of our engineering projects is enormous. In 2006 alone, we will spend over £3 billion on engineering projects.
All our projects are focused on a single aim – to make Britain’s railways better. Some do this by reducing journey times between major cities, others open up new routes for passengers/freight/tourists/rural areas and others aim to make the railway safer.
Network Rail has published a consultation document on its review of project delivery, click here to read more.
Here are just a few of our current projects:
Faster journeys between London, Manchester and Glasgow
Eight billion pounds is being invested into the UK’s busiest railway line, the West Coast. This is one of Europe’s largest engineering challenges and has already delivered significant reductions in journey times for passengers between London, Manchester and Glasgow. In the last two years the London-Manchester journey time has come down by over 30 minutes. Vital work continues into 2008 to reduce the bottleneck at Trent Valley and to improve capacity through Rugby and Nuneaton.
Reliable communications between train drivers and signallers
We are investing £1.7 billion in building a nationwide system which enables train drivers and signallers to communicate securely at all times. This is an important safety improvement for the railway.
Upgrading London’s transport network
London is a vital transport hub and we are delivering investment to improve train services for passengers. Plans to upgrade the Thameslink route – a vital north-south artery through London – are progressing well and we plan to build world class stations in the UK’s capital.
We are also driving a huge programme of investment in preparation for the London 2012 Olympics.
The changing face of Scotland's railway
Some of our highest profile work is taking place in Scotland. This year, we delivered a new railway between Larkhall and Milngavie and we are working closely with our industry partners to push forward more plans to re-introduce the railway line between Airdrie and Bathgate.
This is in addition to the redevelopment of Edinburgh Waverley station which is already underway.
